Latest Flying Carpet from Platform Sales & Hire

UK Access Company Platform Sales & Hire have just completed and supplied their latest Flying Carpet VM26S truck-mounted scissor lift. This unit is slightly different from the usual version as the access platform is mounted on an IVECO chassis which is fitted with a crew cab. The larger cab allows for up to 7 engineers to be transported out to the aircraft ramp together, eliminating the need for extra vehicles on the airport apron, which can be congested at times when an aircraft needs a quick turnaround.

The unit will be working at Manchester Airport and has been supplied to one of the World’s largest suppliers of aircraft Ground support equipment.

The Flying Carpet is in use with airlines all over the World and has continued to be popular since its first introduction in 2006. It continues to be manufactured at PS&H’s engineering division in Milton Keynes. The picture shows Platform Sales & Hire directors Chris Caney and Duncan Howard.

WHAT IS BS 8620? HOW TO MEET THE NEW STANDARD FOR PODIUMS AND LOW-LEVEL WORK PLATFORMS

WHAT IS BS 8620? HOW TO MEET THE NEW STANDARD FOR PODIUMS AND LOW-LEVEL WORK PLATFORMS

The LytePod is fully compliant with the new BS 8620 standard

The introduction of the new BS 8620 standard for low-level work platforms is an important development for all contractors who use podiums on site.

More and more construction sites will start listing BS 8620 as a minimum requirement for use of low-level work platforms.

The LytePod is a fully certified BS 8620 podium. It is available to buy in three different sizes – 1m, 1.2m or 1.5m.

Each podium has two adjustable platform heights and is fully compliant with BS 8620, which has developed from the PAS 250 specifications.

Prolift Access are an official Lyte online supplier, and we have the new BS 8620 LytePod Podiums available for sale on our website.

PASMA are advising any users with non-PAS250 podiums to upgrade their units to the new BS 8620 podiums immediately. Those with PAS250-compliant podiums do not need to stop using them straight away, but are advised to upgrade to BS 8620 when they require replacing.

For more information on the PAS 250 transition to BS 8620, check out PASMA’s PAS250 / BS8620 FAQs. This includes advice on what to do if you currently own non-compliant podiums.

Artists from the world-famous street art and graffiti festival Upfest are using Prolift Access scissor lifts to spruce up Bristol City’s stadium.

Several of Prolift’s 20ft electric scissors are in use by artists Voyder, Inkie and Andy Council, who are decorating a wall in the south-east corner of the Ashton Gate stadium.

The colourful project follows this summer’s hugely successful Upfest 2017, which saw international street artists using Prolift’s boom and scissor lifts to create works of art on walls and buildings across the city.

Upfest co-founder Stephen Hayles said: “We were approached by Ashton Gate to produce something to adorn the walls, inspired by the fantastic street art that is seen across Bedminster and South Bristol.

“We came with a few ideas and then we settled on a final design, which is currently in process.

“Voyder set the background work to the piece, and then Inkie – a Bristol legend – came in to sort the lettering in the design and then we’ve got Andy Council coming in at the end of September to finish the central element – which remains a surprise at the moment.”

A Company has Been Fined £1m After the Death of an Electrician from a Step-ladder Fall

A Company has Been Fined £1m After the Death of an Electrician from a Step-ladder Fall

A self-employed electrical contractor was carrying out some work for a bakery when they fell off a step-ladder that was provided. The worker subsequently died from the injuries.

Hull Crown Court heard how the worker was contracted to complete electrical work for Greencore Grocery Ltd in Hull. In October 2013, the worker was wiring a motor situated above a machine whilst standing on a stepladder. The company agreed this work activity could be completed using a stepladder, which it had provided.

An investigation by the Health & Safety executive (HSE) found that Greencore failed to properly plan the work.

Greencore Grocery Ltd of Apex Park, Amsterdam Road, Sutton Fields Industrial Estate Hull, pleaded guilty to breaching Section 3 (1) of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. It was fined £1,000,000 and ordered to pay costs of £30,000.

HSE inspector Denise Fotheringham said after the hearing: “Falls from height remain one of the most common causes of work related fatalities in Great Britain, the risks associated with working at height are well known.

“Work at height regulations require that all work at height is properly planned and appropriate access is provided. If Greencore had carried this out this death could have been prevented.”

A Harness Saves A Life!

A Harness Saves A Life!

Received from Australia, a dramatic video clip of a man who’s life is saved by wearing an attached harness while unloading a boom lift from a tilt bed truck.

While the video clip was uploaded this week, the security camera footage appears to show that it dates back to 2014 – assuming the date on the camera is correct.

It seems that the man started to drive the platform, a Genie Z-30, down the back of the tilted truck bed, which is fitted with a very steep final ramp. The boom either runs away or comes off one of the ramps. Alternatively the man operates the boom at full speed and then getting nervous lets go of the controls with the brakes slamming on as the front wheels reach the ground. Either ways a huge dynamic overturning force adds to steep angle of the lift and the fact that this type of lift – designed for smooth flat industrial surfaces – has a higher centre of gravity than a Rough Terrain boom.

Gravity naturally has its way, and the boom overturns lengthwise, catapulting the operator from the basket. Thankfully he has a harness on and the lanyard is short enough to keep him from smashing into the ground. A very lucky escape only made possible by the fact that he at least had the brains or training to wear and attach the harness in the first place. If of course he had gone further and attached a winch line he might have avoided the entire event, something his groin area and private parts might be wishing he had done.

This should be cumpulsory viewing for every truck driver delivering aerial work platforms.

Prolift Access were back to help the world’s top graffiti and street artists give Bristol a stunning makeover at Upfest 2017 this weekend.

More than 300 artists visited the city to create their masterpieces on the sides of buildings and venues across Bedminster and Southville.

Prolift also supplied a JLG 800AJ – an articulating diesel boom lift with a maximum platform height of 80ft – to help Brazilian artist Eduardo Kobra create a spectacular technicolour portrait of John Lennon on the wall of the Tobacco Factory.

In addition to supplying machines, Prolift Access also provided ground protection mats and laid on IPAF boom and scissor lift operator training courses for Upfest officials.
